ISCP Buddy Program

What is the New International Student Connections "Buddy" Program?
The primary purpose of this program is to provide individualized assistance and a smooth transition for new international students. By assisting students in adapting to a new country, culture, and environment, we hope to create a less stressful transition and a more hospitable, welcoming atmosphere at UPEI. We also hope the volunteers would have the opportunity to exchange their cultural experiences and to develop cross-cultural communication skills. Volunteers who are planning to go on an exchange program in the future are encouraged to participate in this program. This program is all about exchanging experiences, making international friendships and learning about different cultures. This program is open to all returning students of UPEI. 

What can I do as a buddy?

  • May need to assist with accommodations, course registration, cultural adjustment and others
  • Ask about their experiences
  • Invite them to the things you usually do
  • Be aware of your buddys adjustment needs
  • Organize your own activities together on the weekends, such as a movie night, coffee, supper, sports...
  • Keep in touch as often as possible

How much time should I set aside for the program?

Taking into consideration that some students may require more guidance than others, the amount of time spent on the program and the nature of activities will be left up to the new international student and buddy. However, it is recommended to meet quite often at the beginning of the semester but less frequently towards the end of the semester. Although we hope that the Buddies become friends and will continue to spend time together. There will also be events and activities held throughout the semester for all buddies.

Who can be a buddy?
We are looking for returning UPEI students who have a willingness to help and a sincere desire to build a friendship with an international student. We will match buddies as best as we can, based on the preferences and information filled out on their application form. A training session will be provided to inform buddies on what a new international student may need to know and do upon arrival. If you are able to fulfill the requirements as a UPEI buddy, you will receive a Certificate of Appreciation (Participation).
